Previously: Kar had revealed his theory that the power in the Espanom was a corrupting force becoming more overwhelming the more consistently it was exposed to sentience. He summarized that because he and Jack wore their totems like an extra skin, they were basically more prone to act under the Grimoire's influence rather than being in control. Jack could not deny this truth as he had felt always that there was some form of communication occurring between him and his coat upon which he had sewn the Grimoire symbol as he read aloud from the book. But, unlike Kar, Jack had never acted under the Grimoire's influence but instead managed a compromise which allowed him to to continue without fear of corruption. Still, Jack was beginning to feel a tug at his heart as his growing isolation was taking its toll. Cohen had been secretly working for Adam, Rhodes had disappeared, Crosse was dead and it had been Kar who killed him, crushing him within the folds of that insidious mass of fabric he called a magic carpet.
